Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects individuals’ ability to focus, regulate impulses, and manage their energy levels. It can manifest in various ways, with three main subtypes: inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, or a combination of both.

Key characteristics of ADHD include difficulty sustaining attention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and challenges with organization and time management. It often begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood, impacting academic, occupational, and social functioning.

While ADHD poses unique challenges, it’s essential to recognize that individuals with ADHD also possess strengths, such as creativity, resilience, and unique-problem-solving abilities.

Understanding ADHD involves recognizing the complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and neurological factors contributing to its development. While there is no cure for ADHD, effective management strategies, including therapy, behavioural interventions, and medication, can significantly enhance individuals’ daily functioning and quality of life.
