General Questions
Your First Session
-
There’s nothing you need to prepare in advance. If it feels grounding, you’re welcome to reflect on what brings you into counselling, your goals, or any concerns you’d like to explore. If you prefer structure, you can also let us know ahead of time so that questions or optional intake prompts can be sent to you.
Many neurodivergent clients find it helpful to use these forms or guiding questions to organize their thoughts, identify priorities, or reduce uncertainty before the first session.
-
Session frequency depends on what brings you into counselling, your goals, and what feels sustainable. Many clients begin with weekly or biweekly appointments to build a strong foundation and maintain therapeutic momentum. Over time, you may find that less frequent sessions feel more suitable, or you may choose to pause and return as needed. The goal is to find a rhythm that supports your growth, regulation, and long-term well-being.

Each professional plays a different role in mental health care. The designations vary in training requirements, scope of practice, assessment and treatment services, ability to prescribe medication, and insurance or benefit coverage eligibility. Some providers focus primarily on psychotherapy and counselling support, others specialize in psychological assessment and diagnosis, and psychiatrists provide medical care including medication management.
To explore these differences in more detail, read our blog on mental health professionals in British Columbia.
