AREA OF PRACTICE

Multicultural Identity

Holding multiple cultural identities is a distinct way of being that carries a quiet loneliness. You can end up feeling like you never fully belong to either world, while carrying grief for the parts of yourself you left behind to fit in.

WHAT IT IS

What Is Multicultural Identity Counselling?

Multicultural identity counselling offers space to explore the complexity of living across cultures, whether you are an immigrant, a child of immigrants, or someone whose identity is shaped by belonging to multiple racial, ethnic, or cultural communities at once.

What We Work On

Areas Sessions Cover

  • Navigating identity across competing cultural, generational, or community expectations

  • Acculturation stress and the pressure to assimilate into majority spaces

  • Processing grief and disconnection from homelands, heritage, or former versions of yourself

  • Family dynamics shaped by migration, cultural gaps, and differing value systems

  • The cumulative fatigue of navigating racism, microaggressions, and systemic barriers

  • Navigating third-culture dynamics, intercultural spaces, and feeling like you belong everywhere and nowhere at once

  • Building an integrated sense of self that does not require erasing, hiding, or masking any part of who you are

Multicultural Therapy vs. Third Culture Kid (TCK) Therapy

Differentiating between multicultural identity counselling and Third Culture Kid (TCK) therapy can be confusing, as both support people who navigate life between worlds.

Multicultural Identity Counselling focuses on the lived experience of holding more than one cultural, racial, or ethnic identity within a specific societal context. This area of practice helps immigrants, second-generation individuals, and BIPOC clients navigate shifting between cultural expectations, assimilation pressures, generational family dynamics, and the daily impact of racial microaggressions.

Third Culture Kid (TCK) Therapy addresses the distinct developmental impact of spending formative childhood years across different countries or cultures. Rather than focusing primarily on balancing dual cultural heritages in one place, TCK therapy centers on frequent geographic mobility, developmental displacement, rootlessness, and the grief of repeatedly leaving communities behind.

While these experiences frequently overlap, our clinic offers culturally responsive, LGBTQIA+ affirming, and neurodivergent-affirming care attuned to the nuances of each area of practice.

We Understand Because We’ve Lived It

The therapists at our practice bring lived experience as multicultural individuals and Third Culture Kids. We understand the nuances of living between worlds through our own personal journeys. We get it.
